Before buying, check the dimensions, material, and care instructions. Measure the available space and consider which furniture will sit on or beside the rug. In a living room, it often looks harmonious when at least the front legs of the furniture are on the rug. Under a dining table, the rug should be large enough to accommodate the chairs, even when pulled back.
Gabbeh rugs are typically hand-knotted and have a visible pile, often with bold, minimalist designs. Kilims are flat-woven, so they don’t have a comparable pile height. Feel, appearance, and care vary depending on the style. Read our comparison of Gabbeh and Kilim rugs.
Care depends, among other things, on the fiber, weave, and manufacturer’s instructions. Vacuum gently and regularly, treat stains as soon as possible, and avoid harsh cleaning products unless you know they’re suitable. For delicate or valuable rugs, professional cleaning is recommended.
